Cataract Surgery Recovery

While cataract surgery recovery varies for each patient, the following are typical expectations for recovery after having cataract surgery:

  • You will have your first follow up appointment the day after your cataract surgery. You will also need someone to drive you to and from this appointment.
  • Mild discomfort is normal following surgery, usually disappearing within one to two days. Eye drops are prescribed to speed up the healing process and prevent infection.
  • During the initial healing timeframe, a protective eye shield is recommended while sleeping. You will also wear a special pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and bright lights.
  • Most patients can return to their normal daily routine and normal activities after one week.
  • You shouldn’t rub or press on your eyes for up to one month.
  • Several post-operative visits are needed to check on the progress of the eye as it heals to ensure you get the best treatment results.

And while surgery is done one eye at a time, the other eye may be scheduled for surgery as early as 1-2 weeks later.
